I introduced Alex de Waal who is a fairly obscure but polarising public figure.  He joined the story  for the debate “Can Humanitarian Space be Empty” and I thought he should stay lurking in the background. I think the reason I liked having  him around  was because there is something Inepd about his real persona. He is someone who has attained a public status in the humanitarian and aid world as a critic originally and then becomes part of the scene, loved or hated. He gives a critique of the actors in the Darfur peace process and in the end becomes an actor in the process. He has become a political actor in effect with all the contradictions associated with the role. He is the western medias expert on Darfur(seems to be the only one).

The teachings of De Waal steer the two characters who I really like in the story  InepdShane and InepdShirley down the wrong path. This is my take on what De Waal represents. I think he is someone on the wrong side of history who through a well articulated argument has caused a lot of confusion and generally screwed with peoples minds. Through tireless research and thoughtful analysis he has in the end been quite useful to the Bashir regime and maybe that is what he will be most remembered for. So that is why De Wall is around and  somehow he fits into the Inepd story and becomes the inspiration for the De Waalian cult. That is the origins of the campaign to bring the International Day for Peace before the International Day of Justice in the calender and the De Waalians slogan World Peace not Justice!
